Placing Obituary Notices

How do I place a latest death, news obituary, classified obituary, in memoriam ad, or card of thanks?
Latest death notices are only accepted from funeral directors and representatives of crematoriums and memorial societies, who may call 412-263-1601 from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

News obituaries are prepared by our staff and are published at the editorís discretion. To suggest a news obituary, call 412-263-1601.

Classified obituaries are only accepted from funeral directors and representatives of crematoriums and memorial societies, who may call 412-263-1371 from 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In memoriam ads can be placed by calling our classified department at 412-263-1201.

Cards of thanks can be placed by calling our classified department at 412-263-1201.

What are the latest death lists and are they different from classified obituaries?
The latest deaths report is provided as a public service. Information for this list is only accepted from funeral directors and representatives of crematoriums and memorial societies, who may call 412-263-1601 from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Names on the latest deaths report that are followed by a ďCOĒ indicate that a Classified Obituary has been published for that individual. Funeral directors may place classified obituaries by calling 412-263-1371.

How do I find a news obituary?
If a news obituary appeared in the past few days, you can access it here.

To read a news obituary that appeared more than a few days ago, you can search our site for the personís name by clicking here.

If the news obituary was published prior to 2000, you can visit our paid archives section.

How can I search for a classified obituary?
You can search for obituaries by last name, date, or keyword. Click here to go to the classified obituary search page.

I canít find a specific classified obituary.
If you are searching by last name, make sure that you have the correct spelling. Or, you could search by date if youíre not sure of the exact spelling.

It is also possible that the obituary didnít run in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and was published in a different publication.

How long do classified obituaries stay online?
Obituaries stay online in the classified obituary section for 30 days. While they might not be displayed on the front page, you can search by the last name or date. After 30 days, they are moved into the obituary archives.

How can I find a classified obituary that was published more than 30 days ago?
To access classified obituaries that are older than 30 days, you can visit our obituary archives. Ads appear here indefinitely and date back to early 2000. Click here for access.

Is it possible to view classified obituaries dated prior to 2000?

How can I request a correction for a classified obituary?
Corrections to classified obituaries must be made by the funeral home.

How do I view an obituaryís guest book?
On the classified obituary page click on visit a guest book. You can then search for a guest book by last name.

How do I sign a guest book?
Once you find the guest book you would like to sign, click on the icon that says sign this guestbook that appears in the middle of the page.

Why isnít the guest book entry that I submitted published yet?
Guest book entries are not automatically published; they are reviewed to make sure the content is appropriate. They are usually published within 24-48 hours, so check back to view your entry.

How can I request a correction to a guestbook?
To request a correction in an online guest book, please click here.

How long do guest books stay online?
Guest books remain online for one year unless they are sponsored. Sponsored guest books stay online permanently.

How do I sponsor a guest book?
You can sponsor a guest book to keep it online permanently. Inside the specific guest book you wish to sponsor, click on sponsor this guestbook on the right side of the page.

Is it possible to access a guest book that has already expired?
All expired guest book entries are retained. For more information about restoring a guest book, please click here.

We will need the first and last name and approximate date the guestbook was originally published.


Uploading Photos to Guestbooks

Is it possible to upload a photo into a guest book?
Yes. Once you are inside the specific guestbook, you will see options on the right side of the page. Choose submit a favorite photo to upload a photo into the guestbook.

How can I view photos in a guest book?
Once you are inside the specific guest book, you will see options on the right side of the page. Click on view photo gallery to view the photos that have been uploaded to the guest book.
